Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
