Our Top Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Top Spot.

Initially, this album could seem closer to a challenging academic quiz rather than the latest popular music record by a musician whose last single featured a global pop star. Split across four separate movements and performed in thirteen tongues, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced album exploring female mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, often through the perspective of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with raw honesty elsewhere—is launched skyward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear quite modest.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in escape overly academic posturing feels nearly miraculous, with sole credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first album to alchemize the past with the present, its stakes are far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. What really elevates her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That playful spirit comes forth brightly on a stunning Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down with comedic impact. The song immediately segues to the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that the listener rarely quite know—or even wish to know—where it will go to next."

Nearly each song finishes at a completely distinct point from how it started. A track examines the transient trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic work begins out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act on the album involves straddling the line of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in English builds on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals upward. This trick gets echoed by another expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires patience to completely mine but doesn't feels like a chore. While some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast where the characters at it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative visionary.
