Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
